EXPLORE WORLD'S TINIEST MAMMALS

 A Fascinating Look

In the Earth's wide range of living hierarchies, the tiniest creatures are found in the hierarchies of mammals. They are ranked based on their weight. The smallest mammals of the world appear cute and defenceless. Their tiny size gives them a great advantage in climbing across delicate branches and hunting insects by hiding in thin spaces.

Etruscan Shrew

Shrew is less heavy than a dime, measuring hardly two grams. This tiny man has a huge hunger and eats twice his body weight every day. Shrew( Suncus etruscus) lives in the moist, grassy fields, and are widespread from Southern Eupore and North Africa, few in the parts of East Arabian Peninsula, Central Asia, and South Asia. It also has a fast heart rate of 25 beats per second. Shrew grows up to 1.5 to 2 inches and that does not include its tail, which is one third of its body length. It extends to about 2.3 inches in addition to its tail.

Pygmy Jerboa

The tiny creature is the world's smallest rodent, weighing in at about 3 grams. The Jerboa became the sensation of YouTube in 2010, looking like a cross between a mouse and a baby kangaroo. Jerboa (Salpingotulus michaelis) is native to Pakistan and Afghanistan. 25 different species of Jerboa live across Central Asia and China. The average length of the Jerboa is 2 inches, with a tail that's 3 to 10 inches long.

African Pygmy Mouse

African Pygmy(Mus minutoides) takes the trait of extreme small size in the mouse breed. It stays hydrated by licking dew off tiny pebbles that it cleverly stacks in front of its burrow. African Pygmy weighing around 7.2 grams and measuring 3.5 to 5 centimeters in length. They are highly adaptive in various habitats, including savannas, grassland, and forest edges.

American Shrew Mole

American Shrew Mole(Neurotrichus gibbsli) is about 2 and half inches long, with 1-inch long tail. It is also know as Gibb's shrew mole and lives in the moist forests of the northwestern United States and Southwest British Cloumbia. Unlike its mole relatives, it spends most of its time digging underground tunnels. It can climb on bushes to hunt insects.

Bumblebee Bat

Bumblebee Bats (Craseonycteris thonglongyai) were discovered by Thai zoologist Kitti Thonglongya in 1974. It is also known as Kitti's hog-nosed bat because of its pink, pig-like snout. Weighing barely 2 grams and measuring 1 to 1.3 inches in length, the tiny Bumblebee lives in the caves of the western part of Thailand and Myanmar. It lives in colonies of fewer than 100 bats.

Mouse Lemur

The Lemur (Microcebus danfossi) is a unique species of Madagascar, the world's smallest primate. These Lemurs look for food at night. They feed on with incest, fruit, flowers, and leaves. It weighs 1.5 to 3 ounces on average. There were 18 known species of Mouse Lemurs.
